This fourth painting in my 'Bird on a Perch' series has bucked the trend of the series by being finished within six months of the last one. It's also in landscape rather than portrait format. For once, I managed put some time aside to complete the painting relatively quickly (at least for this series anyway!). I have a couple of other paintings on the go at the moment, so the gap to number five might be a little longer.

This painting of a Dipper, or Water Ouzel, is based on a photograph from an very old issue of BBC Wildlife magazine that I'd uncovered during a bit of a sort out. Unlike the previous painting of the Eurasian Jay in this series, this painting did not incorporate pastel sticks for the background and was completed entirely with Caran D'Ache pastel pencils on Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper.

The pastel paintings in this series will feature many different kinds of birds, from small garden varieties to much bigger wildlife. The series will include paintings of birds on tree stumps, washing lines, flowers, branches and many other perches.
