This was another chance to take a break from painting in pastel. I had not really explored portraiture but got the opportunity to start this drawing at my art class, one of the last pieces I began before the tutor retired and the class closed down. It was revisited a couple of times before finally being finished early the next year. The drawing is derived from several sketches, photographs and some valuable tuition and I was particularly intrigued by the slightly unusual angle of the portrait, which made it different to the usual full face, three-quarter and side-on portraits that I’d practiced the previous year at the class.
